SEC filings · data since 2014

Know where every company stands in its own business cycle.

CycleIQ reads the SEC filings of thousands of companies every month and places each one in its own business cycle, recovering, expanding, topping or contracting, measured against its own history rather than its peers. You get the shortlist, the reasoning, and what would change the reading.

How it works

Three steps, run again every month.

  1. 01

    Read every filing

Every month we read each 10-Q and 10-K filed with the SEC and quantify the operational fundamentals behind it: how fast sales and earnings are growing, how much of each dollar of sales the business keeps, and how much it costs to run.

  2. 02

Measure it against its own history

Each measure is scored against that company's own history, not a sector average, so a grocer and a software firm are each judged on their own terms.

  3. 03

    Place it in the cycle

That lands the company in one of four phases, with the evidence that put it there, the cautions against it, and what would change the reading.

The four phases

One cycle, not four labels.

A company works its way round from contraction to recovery, expansion and topping, and back again. Where it sits is measured against its own operating history, and the counts are live.

Institutional coverage

See who’s buying, and whether they act at this point in the cycle.

Every institution managing $100 million or more files its holdings with the SEC each quarter on Form 13F. CycleIQ reads twelve years of them, from 10,525 institutions, and lines up every buy and sell against the phase the company was in at the time.

Buys and sells, company by company
Who added, who cut and who sold out, and how much the position matters to each of them.
Their patterns, not just their holdings
521 institutions buy or sell differently in particular phases. Patterns found in earlier years pointed the same way over the next two years 72% of the time; chance gives 54%.
A lead on the business
When institutions were adding, the business improved the following quarter 53% of the time; when they were cutting, 44%. That held in 11 of the last 12 years.

Part of the Pro plan.

Against a screener

A screener shows you the whole forest. CycleIQ marks the trees that are turning.

Screeners are good at what they do, and they are the right tool for valuation. The difference is where the work sits.
